What MLB Career Records are safe??
« on: October 17, 2008, 01:09:19 AM »
I was looking at the Baseball Encyclopedia 2007 edition and started looking at some of the lifetime batting records in MLB. Some of these records never will be broken because the game has changed so much. Some of them will have a hard time being beat because the athlete was so good in one aspect of the game and excelled at it. Others for reason of longevity.

Here are some of the All Time MLB records. I am going to list top 2 All Time and the next 2 that are active. Again these are lifetime statistics.

Vlad Guerrero--.325 '96 to current #35

Hits:
Pete Rose--4256 from '63 to '86
Ty Cobb--4189 (doesnt recognize 2 hits that would of made 4191 that Rose had to pass to break record. Not sure why) '05 to '28

Craig Biggio--2930 from '88 to 'current #31
*Barry Bonds 2841-- from '86 to current #42

Active:
**Barry Bonds--734 '86 to current #2
Ken Griffey Jr.--563 '89 to current #10 (26 this year would put him #5)

Jim Thome--1909 '91 to current #6
Craig Biggio--1641 '88 to current #20

The * next to Bonds is how I believe it should read for obvious reasons. I didn't put it next to SB's for Bonds because that was him early in his career, before his swollen head and bulked up body.He went from being the skinny Bonds that would of been HOF bound to a question mark that will surely make it in one day, but maybe not his first ballot anymore.

I believe the games played record and at bats record will never be broken. You would have to play every game for 21.9 seasons to break the games record. For the at bats record you would have to average 702 for 20 seasons (or 600 for 23.4 seasons) to break it.

For the rest of the records I will put what a player would have to average a season for 20 seasons to break the record.

Batting average: I really don't believe anyone can sustain .366 over a 10 year career. Rarely even done for 1 year.

Hits: 212.8 for 20 seasons. If a player averaged 240 hits over a 10 year period, he would still have to average 185 for another 10 years to break the record. Small chance that will happen.

Runs: 114.7 for 20 seasons. If a player is on a great offensive team for alot of years and averages 150 runs over a 10 year period, they would have to average 79.5 over the last 10 years. Bonds might break this if he plays 2 more years, but myself I hope not, as Henderson was one of my favorite players.

Runs Batted in: 114.8 for 10 seasons. Virtually same numbers as runs. Bonds doesn't have a chance at this one. This is one record that I do believe will fall.

Home Runs: 37.7 for 20 seasons. 37 home runs now is a bad year for some players. This record will be broken a few times over the next 10 years. 50 home runs over 10 years then 26 over the next ten will bring you to 760 where I think the record will stand when Bonds retires /goes to prison. (hopefully you will get to meet him PP).

Stolen Bases: Don't think this will ever be broken. You would have to average 70.3 for 20 seasons. Catchers are too strong and pitchers are keeping them closer now than before.

Double's and Triple's: 39.6 a season for double's and 15.6 a season for triples. Double's has a better shot at being broken (triples never will be). This has to do with stronger outfield arms and different size ballparks.

Walks: Dont think this will ever be broken. 121 walks for 20 years.

Strikeouts: 129.8 for 20 seasons. This I believe will be broken several times. You have Adam Dunn, ARod and Manny Ramirez as all possible contenders before their career is done.

This is alot of info thrown out there, hopefully my math is right on all of them (I double checked). I know the career records should be right as I pulled them out of the Baseball Encyclopedia 2007 as I mentioned before.

What is your opinion of unbreakable records? I just did career, what do you think are single season unbreakable records?

this post was from another forum, figured i'd post it here.. here was my response to it:

 1. Cal Ripken's consecitive game streak... though you mention Tejada making it almost half way there.. It would be extremely hard, but I could possibly see it happen some day, problem not while i'm alive though lol..

2. Ryan's strikeout record... untouchable

3. Ryan's no hitter record... untouchable (truly amazing isnt it?)

4. Ty Cobb's lifetime batting average of .366.. (i cant ever see this happening)

5. Ricky Henderson's stolen base total... record is very safe

Cal's is safe for eternity, it would take nothing short of a miracle for someone to play that many seasons without missing a single start.

N.Ryan, one of my all time favorites. I have an autographed picture of Nolan Ryan, in a blood soaked jersey after he was struck in the face by a line drive. He went on to pitch a complete game, shut out. In the face, line drive... in the face. Shut Out! His strikeout record, untouchable. There's a small chance someone could match him for No-Hitters but its only a .0009% chance. Hahah
A N.Ryan record you will never find in a book and one of my favorite games ever, Nolan delivered a fast ball that hit a young, very muscular batter. The guy immediately dropped the bat and charged towards the mound, fists cocked back ready to strike. When he reached the mound, Nolan formally introduced him to a right hook and slammed him on the infield. He was 41 at the time... No pitcher, will touch this one at the age of 41. ;-)

Can we edit this post? someone forgot to put Asterisks next to Bonds name...

Robin Ventura was the batter.

Yep, the triples record is untouchable, that being from the Dead-Ball era.  With the emphasis on power nowadays, the steals record seems safe, at least for a long time.  And Cobb's batting average, ha--unless they allow players to hit from a tee, I don't see that one being broken either.

i have to agree with BadAsOutlaw Cal Ripkin's consecutive game streak is probabley one of the greatest feats in baseball and more then likely untouchable unless some youngster deliberately sets out to break it

The only one that absolutely no matter what has absolutely no chance is Cy Young's win record what is it like 500 career wins, partly due to the fact they pitched so often and were credited with wins easier but still noone will come within a hundred of him.

Cal Ripken definately has that record locked up. I would say all the others can be reached.

No one will ever play for a longer stretch of straight games than Cal Ripkin jr. No one!
