Title: Don't Play Drunk
Post by: Whitewolf2k on August 19, 2008, 05:10:46 PM

Countless nights have I sat across a table from someone & watched them get plastered silly and throw away their entire stack of chips. I've been that person too - and there are nights where you're just playing with friends for low stakes and it's more about the fun than the poker - but if you're in a casino, watch the alcohol. The truth is, while you may be more relaxed after 2 drinks, it may lead to you playing looser and less sharply, even if one's not 'drunk.'

I think it depends on the quality and skill level of the player. An amateur/new player I would advise not to drink. No-one should ever get plastered I agree for sure. But a few drinks can relax a player without impairing there judgement. I think of the Chinese PRO with the glasses who calls everyone Baby. He always has a beer at Final tables in TV Tournaments and is always talking, joking and laughing. It makes him impossible to READ.
Also I have heard stories of PRO,s playing Big Money games all night and showing up dead tired to play the Final table. But it,s almost there lifestyle and doesn,t affect there play.  :)

There's another situation I forgot to mention before where someone took down a major tournament while drunk.  Bill Smith won the WSOP main event.  I think it was one of the times TJ Cloutier came second.

Alcohol and Poker definately doesn't go hand in hand, at least for me. I can't understand why people playing at Casinos drink (some heavily) while playing. I've had my share of luck at live tables with not that small blinds and no limit.

Most be guys loaded with money who play mostly for the thrill of betting.

I agree dont drink at the table. If you are going
to just sip on one or two but no more than that
unless your just playing low stakes and is just for
fun.

Personally I do not drink (I learned to guzzle at a young age thou).  Some of my worst bad beats on-line or life has been from drunk or plastered players.  My worst beat I had Ks cracked by 2 7 os and the person remarked hey I'm drunk!

Best thing I can say is just play with the cash you are willing to lose period.  Oh by the I do play discipline styles that include card selection and bank roll management and that should be used sober or drunk!  If your game plan does not come natural you when you are sober, drunk or after a bad beat you are walking down the road to losing your money.

I use 4 different strategies and switch all the time during a game so not to become to predictable.

So find your comfort zones for strategies, money management and alcohol limit while playing any game with money.

Yeah I hate when I come home drunk to find myself logging into my poker account. I wake up the next morning not remembering anything, and when I log in my account is hit hard..My one friend for some reason plays better drunk..He came in 9th in a 50,000 gurantee plastered..He may have won, but he passed out at the final table..HAHA

One time in a live game, this one guy was playing real stupid. I realized he was drunk and when he finally left the table, he start yelling at everyone even the dealer. He thought everyone was after him. so silly.
